Family Promise Apartment start up kits began in October 2007 with a small group of women who wanted to have a hands-on project that would directly benefit those who needed it the most--the homeless. The Lakes Lutheran Church assembles kitchen and bathroom starter kits for families that are moving into an apartment after being homeless.   Family Promise houses and feeds families while they are looking for a job, while helping them find a home. Family Promise is assisting approximately 42 families a year taking them from homelessness to a home of their own.  When they are ready to make this step they need help with kitchen and bathroom supplies.  Kitchen Kits:

4 plates, 4 bowls, 4 cups, 4 glasses, 1 or 2 serving bowls, silverware (4 place settings), plastic storage containers, 4 napkins or placemats, plastic drink container, 1 or 2 pans 1 or 2 fry pans, large spoon, spatulas, 2 knives, can opener, dish cloths, dish towels, cake or roasting pan, roll of paper towels, spice kit, recipe booklet, a large waste basket, a laundry basket, and a calendar

Since starting in October 2007, two hundred and five kits have been given to Family Promise with an approximate value of $26,000 (figure from 2010 annual report--add 10 kits/month).     This represents 700 hours of volunteering since the beginning.   Twenty-nine people have helped to put the kits together and many others have donated new and gently used items for the kits.  Each kit's approximate value  is $136.00. Bathroom Kits:

4 bath towels, 4 wash cloths, 2 hand towels, bathroom rug, 2 soap bars, shampoo, spray disinfectant, 2 rolls of toilet paper, tissue, laundry detergent, dish soap, tooth brush and toothpaste, and a small waste basket

This program would not be possible without the financial support of Thrivent.  In 2007 and  2008 we received $1,600.00 in funding from Thrivent Financial from their Care Abounds in the Community Program.  These funds are used to purchase items for the kits.

We assemble kits the first Thursday afternoon of the month at 1:30 PM.   This will be an on-going ministry with The Lakes Lutheran Church and Thrivent in their Care Abounds in Communities program.
