After the largest search-and-rescue mission in Texas history pulled out some 2,000 people stranded by hurricane Ike's 500-mile-wide storm surge, an equally massive humanitarian relief effort has kicked into gear to bolster a dazed southeast Texas, where gas, food, ice, and patience are all in short supply" (Christian Science Monitor--http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/0916/p01s06-usgn.html).

During the summer of 2009 a group of 20 teamed up with New Promise, St. George, Utah, Habitat for Humanity, and Thrivent Builds and travel to Galveston, Texas, to take part in the renewal of this hurricane hit area. The crew from our congregation committed to this mission a week of their own vacation time and money to rebuild homes for families.  Our congregation provided all kinds of support, including money, tools, food, encouragement, and best of all, prayer.

Our mission trips have taken us in the past with many other congregations to Baja California, Mexico, to build houses for families in need and to the Navajo reservation. Partner congregations have included Christ the Servant (Henderson), New Song (Henderson), Community, Holy Spirit, New Hope (now part of Good Sam), and Good Samaritan, all of Las Vegas.

Next summer we will venture to the Navajo Mission in Arizona to repair houses and help the ELCA ministry we support. Pray for the mission that all will continue in good health and be uplifted by the work, and those receiving help will be blessed by our efforts.

To help make a difference in people's lives, please donate toward this project. This will help buy materials for rebuilding houses.
